How to Get Rid of EczemaEczema is a skin condition that most commonly manifests itself in itchiness and redness. Excessive scratching, along with the condition itself, can also lead to other symptoms like skin flaking, developing blisters, rashes or even skin oozing.

Needless to say, eczema can be extremely embarrassing socially, as well as extremely unpleasant overall. So how does one get rid of eczema?

Identify the Cause

There is no overall cause of eczema. Different people have skin reactions to different substances. This is one of the reasons why it’s so difficult to prescribe a cure-all solution for eczema.

However, generally speaking, eczema is most likely caused by the things that come in contact with your skin. More specifically, that means your lotions, your detergents, your soaps and possibly your shampoos and conditioners.

The easiest way to see if the chemical products you have in your life are causing your eczema is to remove them. For a period of 2 to 4 weeks, simply stop using those products. Shower with plain water for a few weeks and avoid detergent at all costs.

Many people find that this alone is enough to cure them of eczema. From then it’s just a matter of replacing those past products with more natural, chemical-free versions.

As a rule of thumb, products that have a strong scent to them.

Skin Moisturizers

Another way to treat eczema is to use skin moisturizers to reduce dryness and ease the itching.

Most of eczema’s symptoms aren’t actually caused by dermatitis, the actual skin condition, but by the scratching that accompanies the itching. It’s easy to say “don’t scratch,” but in reality it’s incredibly difficult to not scratch when you have eczema.

If you can get rid of the urge to scratch however, you can bypass most of the worst symptoms, such as rashes, skin flaking, bleeding or oozing.

Skin moisturizers can help with this. By regularly applying skin moisturizers, you can greatly reduce the sense of itching.

Make sure to use a moisturizer that has little to no risk of worsening the eczema. One common option is calamine lotion, available over the counter at most pharmacies.

Anti-Histamines

Eczema can be caused by an allergic reaction in the body. The histamines in your bloodstream over react to some sort of irritant in its system, resulting in itchiness and rashes.

Antihistamines can help prevent your body’s over-reacting immune system from creating that kind of reaction. Over the counter antihistamines will often do the job.

You can also try anti-inflammatory creams on the skin, which work in a very similar manner.

One common cause of eczema is actually an allergy to nickel. Because nickel is in so many materials, from everyday coins to watches, contact with them is very common. Nickel allergy can develop later in life, so even if you’ve worn the same watch every day for years, it can still suddenly pop up.

Antihistamines can help with this issue.

These are some of the most common causes and cures for eczema. You can use lotions and antihistamines to help relieve the symptoms of eczema; but at the end of the day the ideal goal is to identify what’s causing these reactions and eliminate them from your life.
